Instagram Bio Character Limit: 150, Plus Caption & Hashtags

By the InstaGTrends Editorial Team · Checked and updated 3 November 2026

Your Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters, a Note can be up to 60 characters, and a post can carry up to 5 hashtags. Instagram states all three in its Help Center [1] [2] [3]. Other limits you will see quoted online, such as 2,200 characters for a caption, are not on any Help Center page we could find. This guide gives every limit with a clear label, so you know which numbers come from Instagram, which we tested ourselves, and which are only widely reported.

Checked 3 November 2026: we read the Instagram Help Center pages for bios, Notes and hashtags, and we tested the bio and Note boxes on instagram.com in a desktop browser. We typed into the boxes but did not save, post or send anything.

“Official” means Instagram’s own Help Center gives the number. “Tested” means we checked it in Instagram ourselves on the date above. “Widely reported” means many guides repeat the figure but Instagram does not publish it, so treat it as a guide, not a guarantee.

Instagram bio character limit (150)

Instagram’s Help Center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters, and reminds you that anyone can see your bio [1]. In our test on instagram.com, the bio box shows a counter such as “120 / 150”. When we typed past the limit, the box still accepted the text, but the counter turned red (for example “164 / 150”) and showed an error mark. Shorten the bio until the counter is back to 150 or less before you save.

What counts toward the 150

In our test on instagram.com, the bio counter counted characters like this:

  • Letters, punctuation, spaces and line breaks counted as one each. The text “a b.c,d!” plus a line break and one more letter showed as 10 / 150.
  • Emoji counted as two each. 5 smiley emoji showed as 10 / 150.
  • Styled “font” letters also counted as two each. More on this below.

On the same Edit profile page, the website is a separate box from the bio, so a link in that box does not use your bio characters.

How to fit more into your bio

  • Lead with what you do and who it is for, then cut filler words such as “welcome to my page”.
  • Use one emoji as a bullet instead of a word, but remember each one costs about two characters.
  • Keep styled letters for one or two words, such as your name, rather than the whole bio.
  • Move details you can’t fit into Story Highlights or a pinned post, and point to them in a short line.
  • Count before you paste. If the counter turns red, shorten the text before you save.

Name and username limits

Your display name and your username each have a widely reported limit of 30 characters, but Instagram’s Help Center, which explains how to change both, does not state a number [4]. Your name is the display name in bold on your profile. Your username is your @handle and appears in your profile link.

The Help Center does note two things about username changes. If your account reaches a lot of people, a new username may need to be reviewed first. Your followers may also be told that you changed it [4].

When a username you want is taken, the Help Center suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations to find one that is free [6]. Guides widely report that usernames can’t contain spaces, while the display name can. That is why styled letters usually go in the name, not the username.

Caption character limit

The figure you will see almost everywhere is 2,200 characters per caption. We could not find it on any Instagram Help Center page, so we list it as widely reported. If your caption is cut short when you post, shorten it and try again.

Where Instagram cuts the caption off in the feed

It is widely reported that the feed shows only the first line or two of a long caption and hides the rest behind “more”. People decide whether to tap from that opening, so put the main point or question at the start and the hashtags at the end.

Hashtag limit: now 5 per post

Instagram’s Help Center now says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that if you include more than 5 on a single photo or video, your comment won’t post [3]. Many guides still say 30 hashtags, but that figure is out of date.

The same page lists three more rules [3]:

  • Hashtags can contain numbers, but spaces and special characters such as $ or % don’t work.
  • You can add hashtags in the caption or in a comment on your own post.
  • If your account is private, your tagged posts don’t appear publicly on hashtag pages.

With only 5 to choose, pick tags that describe the post exactly rather than broad ones that millions of posts already use.

Comment and DM limits

Instagram doesn’t publish a character limit for comments or direct messages, and the numbers quoted online don’t agree. For everyday comments and messages you are very unlikely to reach a limit. If a long message won’t send, split it into two.

Hashtags in comments follow the same rule as the post: more than 5 tags and the comment won’t post [3].

Notes and alt text limits

Instagram’s Help Center limits a Note to 60 characters [2], and it publishes no length limit for alt text.

Notes are short updates that appear at the top of your inbox and above your profile picture. A note stays visible for up to 24 hours, and you can share one note at a time [2]. When we tested on instagram.com, the note box let us keep typing past 60 without a counter. We did not share it, so stay within 60 to be safe.

Alt text describes a photo for people who use screen readers. Instagram writes automatic alt text with object recognition, and you can replace it with your own description [7]. Keep it to one or two clear sentences.

Do fancy fonts count as more characters?

Yes. In our test, 10 bold “font” letters typed into the bio showed as 20 / 150 on the counter. The same thing happened with emoji.

The reason is that these styled letters are not a font at all. They are special characters from Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, which looks like bold, italic or script lettering [5]. These characters sit outside the basic range of Unicode, so in the common UTF-16 text format each one takes two units [8]. Our test shows Instagram’s web counter counting those units, so a bio written entirely in styled letters fits about 75 letters, not 150.

Keep your name and main keywords in plain letters, and use styled letters for decoration. Our guide on how to change fonts on Instagram explains where styled text works and where it doesn’t.

FAQs

Is the Instagram bio limit really 150 characters?

Yes. Instagram’s Help Center says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters [1], and the counter on instagram.com turns red once you go past 150.

Do emojis count toward the bio limit?

Yes, and usually as two characters each. In our test, 5 emoji counted as 10.

Why can’t I add more hashtags?

Instagram’s Help Center now says you can use up to 5 tags on a post, and that with more than 5 on a single photo or video your comment won’t post [3].

Does the website link count toward my bio?

No. In our test, the website was a separate box on the Edit profile page, so it doesn’t use your bio characters.

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

Widely reported as 2,200 characters, though Instagram doesn’t state it in its Help Center. Put the key message in the first line or two, which is widely reported to be all the feed shows before “more”.
